Grassroots Group Creates Petition to Save Historic Church
Churdan, Iowa- A grassroots group has created an online petition to save a historic church near Churdan, Iowa. The Church will be open tomorrow as RAGBRAI riders ride through town. A hard copy of the petition will be available for signatures at the Church.
St. Patrick's Church was the first Catholic church in Greene County. The current building was constructed in 1915 in the Romanesque Revival style. It was dedicated by Bishop Philip Garrigan on November 7, 1915 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
The Church sits at the corner of gravel road and gravel road, four miles west of Churdan, with a cemetery containing Greene County pioneers and family members of many residents in Greene County and around the world.
The Diocese has mentioned that the Church may be set for destruction. A dedicated and prayerful group of history and Church lovers have come together with the help of social media including facebook and twitter to save St. Patrick's Church.
